Joseph A. Fried

“Our job as trial lawyers is first to listen – really listen – so that we can find the compelling human story in our client’s case. Then we have to tell that story in a way that makes it the compelling story of each juror. When the jurors can be heroes, great verdicts happen.”

Joseph A. Fried

Joe Fried is regarded as one of the top truck crash lawyers in the country today. His passion for what he does is palpable, and his results speak for themselves. In addition to handling commercial motor vehicle crash cases, Joe is a recognized highway safety advocate and a leader in educating other lawyers on how to maximize results in trucking litigation. He has handled cases in more than 30 States with many record results and has given over 300 presentations to lawyer, judge, and police audiences on trucking and trial-related topics.

Joe has always protected the vulnerable and fought for the deserving underdog. As a kid he fought bullies in schoolyards and playgrounds. In high school, he was the kid who protected the unpopular student. At age 19, Joe became one of the youngest police officers in Atlanta, Georgia, working 80-hour weeks while attending undergraduate school. As a police officer, Joe learned a lot about people and how things work in the real world. He investigated hundreds of crashes and crime scenes and spent a lot of time in courtrooms. He learned that justice is not blind, and people are not treated equally in a courtroom. More importantly, he witnessed first-hand the difference a good lawyer can make.

Joe graduated with highest honors from Oglethorpe University (1990), then with honors from the University of Georgia Law School (1993). He served as an attorney law clerk to honorable B. Avant Edenfield, Chief U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Georgia. In 1994, Joe entered private practice in Atlanta and was also appointed as a part-time Magistrate Judge in Fulton County, Georgia. He was hand selected by then-chief judge Charlie Carnes. Joe was the youngest judge to ever have been appointed in Fulton County, Georgia. Joe served as a part time judge for 20 years while at the same time building and running and law practice with national reach.

After years of successfully handing defective automotive product cases, it was time for a change. In the fall of 2006, everywhere Joe turned he saw news of another truck crash. While he had no truck crash cases, he felt called to this area (literally at 3:00 one morning). That very day he was retained in his first truck crash case. Other lawyers thought he lost his mind since no one at the time was focusing their practice this narrowly, but Joe believed he could make a difference. He dedicated himself to learning everything there was to learn about trucks, driving trucks, and the trucking industry. When he saw that other lawyers were handling these cases as if they were simply big car crashes, he realized there were errors in that approach and developed innovative approaches based on the things that made trucking cases unique. The successes started coming quickly and news of them spread nationally. Instead of keeping these techniques and knowledge to himself, Joe started sharing with other lawyers across the United States. His vision was that improving how truck crash cases were handled nationally would have a positive effect on highway safety. To date, Joe has trained thousands of lawyers. At the same time, he continues to innovate.

Joe brings to his cases a unique multi-disciplinary education and experience. He has in-depth knowledge of physics, engineering, forensics, dynamics, biomechanics, human factors and accident reconstruction. This gives him a strong edge investigating cases, communicating with law enforcement, working with experts and taking on technical witnesses at trial. Along with his technical knowledge and experience, Joe has a strong background in psychology, psychodrama, story development and telling, neurolinguistics programing and persuasion sciences. This training is invaluable to finding and presenting the compelling story of a case. Joe is known for thinking outside the box when it comes to case strategy, development and presentation and his work is emulated by attorneys across the country.

Joe is on the faculty of the prestigious Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College in Dubois, Wyoming, and is one of the most sought-after speakers and teachers in the Country.

Over 95% of Joe’s cases are sent to him by other lawyers who know about his abilities and track record.

Joe was named Trucking Trial Lawyer of the Year in 2014 and 2015 by the American Association of Justice Trucking Litigation Group, Best GA Personal Injury Lawyer by Best Lawyers in American in 2016 and has been named a Superlawyer every year since 2007.
