GREENACRES, FL – A boy riding on a bicycle was struck and killed by a delivery truck in Greenacres, FL on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. The boy, who was 8 years old, was riding with his father on his way home from school. They were riding on separate bicycles at the time of the accident.

Greenacres is in Palm Beach County, Florida in the southeastern part of the state, about 13 miles southwest of Palm Beach and about 64 miles north of Miami.

The accident happened at about 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Jog Road and 13th Road South. The two were riding southbound on the sidewalk. They were getting ready to cross 13th Road South when the little boy was hit by the delivery truck. The delivery truck was making a turn from 13th Road South onto Jog Road when it hit the boy on his bike.

The victim was identified as Elian Rojas, who attended third grade at the Pine Jog Elementary School on Summit Boulevard near the site of the accident.

The delivery truck is owned by RecoverCare, from Orlando, FL and with a business license out of Jacksonsville, FL. It is a privately owned company that delivers products to health care facilites. The truck had just come from making a delivery from Woodlake Nursing and Rehab Center in the 6400 block of 13th Road South.

People in the area did everything they could to save the boy after he had been injured, but when Palm Beach Fire & Rescue arrived, the child was pronounced dead.

Northbound Jog Road. was closed between Forest Hill Blvd to Olive Tree Blvd but was repoened a few hours later. Police say they are investigating the accident and that charges against the truck driver are pending.
